Yoon Suk-Yeol, president of South Korea, said the “nation needs its own nuclear weapons.”

At the “Harvard Kennedy School” in Cambridge on Friday, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol gave a lecture and answered questions about the issues his nation is experiencing, especially the threat posed by the neighbouring North Korean regime’s nuclear weapons.

Yoon cited a fresh strategy for enhanced nuclear deterrence to meet any North Korean threat that he outlined on Wednesday with President Joe Biden.

Yoon stated at the question-and-answer session that followed his address at the Kennedy School, “If we were willing to permit nuclear weapons by North Korea, then South Korea may have been carrying nuclear weapons.” “We don’t want to see this happen,”

Yoon continued, “The outcome is quite obvious” if North Korea were to use nuclear weapons.

For the first time in decades, periodic connecting of “American nuclear-armed submarines” in South Korea is proposed in the so-called “Washington Declaration,” which was presented by Biden and Yoon on Wednesday. It also calls for improving bilateral training.

Yoon recognised that “there is some view in our Korean society that we must get our own weaponry due to North Korea’s escalating nuclear missile threats.”

He claimed that the acquisition of nuclear weapons is a more complex issue than a purely technical one. The political and economic issues are extremely complicated.

On a brighter note, Yoon acknowledged the cultural bridges South Korea had built with pop stars like BTS, the survival drama “Squid Games,” and films like the Academy Award-winning “Parasite,” but it refused to claim any of the credit.

In his remarks to a joint session of Congress on Thursday, Yoon hailed the U.S.-South Korean defence alliance that has existed since the end of the “Korean War seven decades” prior as “the keystone protecting our independence, peace, and economy.”

Big personalities from business, sports, politics, and entertainment attended the state dinner that Biden gave for Yoon and his wife, including actress Angelina Jolie, the Chip and Joanna Gaines home renovation team, and Olympic snowboarder Chloe Kim.
