Inside Out 2 has achieved the milestone of becoming the highest-grossing animated film of all time, just six weeks after its theatrical release.
The sequel to 2015’s Inside Out has amassed $1.46 billion (£1.13 billion) globally, surpassing the previous record held by Frozen II, which earned $1.45 billion in 2019. The film’s earnings are expected to grow further as it has yet to open in Japan. Additionally, Inside Out 2 has exceeded the box office performance of last year’s top film, Barbie, which made $1.45 billion. However, it has not yet surpassed Disney’s 2019 remake of The Lion King, which garnered $1.65 billion (£1.28 billion). Although The Lion King was computer-generated, it was classified as a live-action remake by the studio, so it is not considered an animated film.
Overall, Inside Out 2 now ranks as the 13th highest-grossing film of all time, though it still trails behind Avatar ($2.9 billion, £2.2 billion) and Avengers: Endgame ($2.7 billion, £2.1 billion).
Of Inside Out 2‘s total earnings, approximately $601 million (£466 million) was made in the US, with $861 million (£668 million) coming from international markets, including $61 million (£47 million) from the UK. The film’s production cost was around $200 million (£155 million), excluding marketing expenses.
The film’s success is a significant rebound for Pixar, which has faced challenges in recent years, partly due to many releases being shifted to streaming platforms during the pandemic when cinemas were largely closed.
The Inside Out films explore the emotional landscape of a young girl named Riley, with the latest installment introducing new emotions like Anxiety, Envy, and Embarrassment as Riley transitions into her teenage years.
