The host of the popular US show “Wheel of Fortune,” Pat Sajak, has decided to retire.

After a long and illustrious tenure, Pat Sajak, the beloved host of “Wheel of Fortune,” has announced that the upcoming 41st season of the popular US game show will be his final one. Having started his hosting duties in 1981, Sajak, who is now 76 years old, will transition into a role as a consultant for the programme, as confirmed by the show’s producers.

In 2018, Sajak achieved a remarkable milestone by becoming the longest-running host of a game show, surpassing the legendary Bob Barker from The Price Is Right. He took over from the original host, Chuck Woolery, and has skillfully guided the show for over four decades. In 1983, the show took on its familiar form with the addition of co-host Vanna White, who joined Sajak and has been an integral part of the programme ever since.

Sajak shared the news of his departure on Twitter, expressing his gratitude for the incredible journey he has had. He mentioned that he would share more about his decision in the months to come. The host briefly took a break in 2019 due to health reasons, as he underwent surgery for a blocked intestine. However, he made a full recovery and returned to his hosting duties.

Suzanne Prete, the executive vice president of game shows at Sony Pictures Television, expressed delight at Sajak’s decision to stay involved as a consultant for three years following his final year as the host.

Wheel of Fortune continues to be a primetime staple, attracting a staggering 26 million viewers every week, according to Sony. The show’s enduring popularity is evident, as over 10,000 people audition each year for the chance to participate.

Originally based on the classic game “Hangman,” the show revolves around a spinning wheel that determines the prizes to be won by solving word puzzles. Since its inception, Wheel of Fortune has awarded more than $250 million (£199 million) in prizes, showcasing its immense impact and appeal.

As Wheel of Fortune prepares for its 41st season, fans can cherish the remaining episodes with Pat Sajak as the beloved host while eagerly anticipating the exciting new chapter that lies ahead for this iconic game show.
