Expert Tips for Living with Autoimmune Arthritis and Enhancing Well-Being

Autoimmune arthritis, characterized by the immune system attacking normal joints, can cause pain, swelling, and stiffness. The most common forms include rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and spondyloarthropathies. While these conditions are chronic, health experts emphasize that effective management through medication, exercise, and self-care techniques can significantly improve one’s quality of life.

In a recent interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr. Chethana D, a Consultant Rheumatologist at Aster CMI Hospital in Bengaluru, emphasized the importance of early diagnosis and treatment in preventing debilitating and deforming arthritis. She noted that individuals with arthritis may take longer to complete daily tasks compared to their peers and would benefit from support and understanding from their loved ones.

To manage symptoms, Dr. Chethana D provided several recommendations. Promptly taking prescribed medications is crucial for symptom control and preventing flare-ups. Many patients experience significant early morning joint stiffness, which can be eased by taking hot showers twice a day. While traveling, it is advisable to carry light baggage to avoid worsening pain in the wrists or shoulders. If symptoms persist, seeking prompt advice from a healthcare provider is essential.

Dr. Balakrishna GK, a Senior Consultant in Internal Medicine at BGS Gleneagles Global Hospital in Bengaluru, explained that arthritis refers to joint inflammation and discomfort. Autoimmune arthritis specifically involves the immune system attacking the body’s own tissues, commonly seen in rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis. He outlined several tips for managing arthritis effectively:

1. Regular Exercise: Engaging in moderate physical activity for at least 150 minutes per week can reduce joint stiffness and improve range of motion. Low-impact activities such as walking, swimming, or water aerobics are recommended to minimize pressure on joints.

2. Maintain a Healthy Weight: Being overweight or obese increases the risk of developing arthritis and exacerbates pain. Losing weight can relieve joint pressure and reduce discomfort.

3. Practice Proper Posture: Paying attention to posture while sitting or standing can alleviate joint pressure and discomfort. Consultation with a physical therapist may help develop good posture habits.

4. Quit Smoking: Smoking harms bones, joints, and connective tissues, worsening rheumatoid arthritis symptoms. Quitting smoking is crucial for managing the condition effectively.

5. Balance Rest and Activity: Striking a balance between rest and physical activity is essential in managing arthritis. Be physically active daily but listen to your body’s signals and take breaks when needed.

6. Medication Adherence: Following prescribed medication regimens, including anti-inflammatories, pain relievers, and biologics (for rheumatoid or psoriatic arthritis), is crucial for managing symptoms effectively.

7. Stress Management: Arthritis can impact mental and emotional well-being. Finding relaxation strategies such as meditation, yoga, or engaging in hobbies can reduce stress levels.

8. Physical Therapy: Heat and cold treatments can provide temporary relief for joint pain. Applying heat using a heating pad or taking hot baths can alleviate pain, while cold treatments like ice packs help reduce inflammation after physical activity.

9. Healthy Diet: Paying attention to dietary choices and incorporating foods known to fight inflammation, such as soy, olive oil, cherries, low-fat dairy products, and omega-3-rich fatty fish, can benefit individuals with rheumatoid arthritis.

10. Seek Emotional Support: Surrounding oneself with a supportive network of friends and family and considering therapy can alleviate the emotional impact of arthritis.

By implementing these expert tips, individuals can effectively manage their autoimmune arthritis symptoms and improve their overall quality of life. It is important to consult with healthcare providers for personalized advice tailored to specific conditions.
