Usher is set to headline the Super Bowl half-time show in 2024, following in the footsteps of Rihanna, who wowed the audience with her performance last February, during which she also revealed her pregnancy.
Expressing his excitement, Usher said, “It’s an honour of a lifetime to finally check a Super Bowl performance off my bucket list. I can’t wait to bring the world a show unlike anything else they’ve seen from me before.”
Usher, a prominent R&B star of the late 1990s and 2000s, boasts a string of multi-platinum hits, including “You Make Me Wanna,” “Pop Ya Collar,” “Yeah!,” “Burn,” and “Confessions Pt II.”
While Usher has previously appeared as a special guest during the Super Bowl in 2011, alongside the Black Eyed Peas, where he made a breathtaking leap over Will before landing in the splits, this headline performance is a significant milestone in his career.
His selection as the Super Bowl headliner is a result of the National Football League’s partnership with Jay-Z’s entertainment agency, Roc Nation, aiming to elevate the quality of Super Bowl halftime shows. Previous years have featured star-studded performances, with Rihanna, Dr. Dre, Kendrick Lamar, Mary J. Blige, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, 50 Cent, The Weeknd, Shakira, and Jennifer Lopez gracing the stage.
Understanding the massive Super Bowl audience, Usher plans to release a new album titled “Coming Home” on the same day as the event. In a recent interview, he hinted at the possibility of inviting special guests to join him on stage, having collaborated with numerous renowned artists throughout his career.
Reflecting on the legacy of artists like Michael Jackson and Prince, who brought remarkable R&B showmanship to the Super Bowl stage, Usher emphasised the significance of the moment, saying, “Thirty years of a career deserves this kind of moment.”
Jay-Z, who played a key role in selecting Usher for the performance, praised him as “the ultimate artist and showman” and expressed anticipation for the magic Usher would bring to the stage.
The 2024 Super Bowl is scheduled to take place on February 11 at Las Vegas’s Allegiant Stadium, known for its $2 billion investment in state-of-the-art facilities.
