Donald Trump’s presidential campaign filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission on Tuesday, alleging that Vice President Kamala Harris unlawfully assumed control of funds raised by President Joe Biden’s reelection campaign. Biden, an 81-year-old Democrat who was in a close race with Republican challenger Donald Trump, endorsed Harris when he suspended his reelection bid on Sunday. Harris swiftly took charge of Biden’s campaign finances and secured the nomination by garnering commitments from a majority of delegates ahead of next month’s party convention, according to her campaign. The dispute over the approximately $95 million in campaign accounts marks part of a broader Republican effort to thwart Harris’s candidacy as the Democratic presidential nominee.
The Trump campaign asserted that Harris engaged in what they termed a “bold money grab,” as outlined in the filing by David Warrington, the campaign’s general counsel. Warrington, who shared details of the filing with Reuters, described Harris’s actions as potentially constituting “the largest campaign finance violation in American history.” Saurav Ghosh, an attorney at the non-partisan watchdog group Campaign Legal Center, suggested that Harris’s claim to the funds, given her role as the vice presidential candidate under “Biden for President,” should be considered legitimate.
However, election regulators are unlikely to resolve the issue before the November 5 presidential election.
The FEC stated that they could not comment on ongoing enforcement matters.
Meanwhile, Harris’s campaign reported raising $100 million since Biden’s endorsement on Sunday, surpassing Biden’s remaining campaign funds in just a few days. The campaign dismissed the FEC complaint.
“Republicans may envy the Democratic enthusiasm to defeat Donald Trump and his MAGA allies, but their unfounded legal claims — akin to those made over the years to suppress votes and manipulate elections — will only divert them from our efforts to recruit volunteers, engage voters, and secure victory in this election,” remarked Charles Kretchmer Lutvak, a spokesperson for Harris’s campaign.
