Cricket: Joe Root made his debut in the IPL with the Rajasthan Royals against the Sunrisers Hyderabad.

English cricketer Joseph Edward Root, 32, made his debut in the Indian Premier League with Rajasthan Royals by defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Jos Buttler, a teammate of Root’s from England and the Royals, scored 95 runs off 59 balls to help his team total 214-2, while Root did not bat or bowl.

Root appeared to win on his debut thanks to Yuzvendra Chahal’s four-wicket haul, which appeared to have restricted the Sunrisers.

However, the Sunrisers’ 217-6 victory was made possible by Glenn Phillips’ seven-ball stretch of four boundaries and Abdul Samad’s six off the penultimate ball.

Buttler and Yashasvi Jaiswal, the Royals’ opening pair, smashed 50 runs together in just five overs before the England player and captain Sanju Samson had a 138-run alliance.

Nine deliveries remained when he was bowled, but because the hosts only lost two wickets, Root was not required to bat.

Rahul Tripathi (47) and Abhishek Sharma (55) served as the foundation for the Sunrisers’ steady start to their pursuit. Sharma fell off the bowling of Ravichandran Ashwin, who had given the Royals the upper hand along with Chahal.

But before Samad’s game-changing shot, New Zealand batsman Phillips changed the outcome with three sixes and a four to score 25 off seven balls.

Samad got knocked off the first ball and trapped on the sixth delivery of the last over, which the Sunrisers needed to score 17 runs off of. However, no ball was ruled.

Later, he then smashed Sandeep Sharma over the fence when he needed four to win.
