The killing of a Black man in the supermarket in Brazil sparks violent protest

The killing of a Black man by two white security guards at Carrefour supermarket in Porto Alegre, Brazil has sparked violent protests across the country. The man died after he was beaten by the security guards. In a viral video it can be seen that one guard was restraining the man, Joao Alberto Silveria Freitas just outside the supermarket and the other security guard was repeatedly striking his face. Later clips recorded after the initial strikes showed a guard kneeling on Freitas’ back. The death is being compared to George Floyd’s death in the US. The man in Brazil was killed on the eve of Brazil’s Black consciousness Day. Protests have taken over several Carrefour supermarkets in Brazil. The demonstrators are chanting, “Black lives matter” and “Carrefour killer”.
