Brie Larson ‘thrilled’ about her London theatre debut

Oscar-winning actress Brie Larson, renowned for her roles in Room and Lessons in Chemistry, is set to make her UK stage debut next year in a Greek tragedy. The 34-year-old will star in Elektra, an adaptation of Sophocles’ play translated by poet Anne Carson. Directed by Daniel Fish, the production will open in Brighton in January 2025 before moving to the West End for an 11-week run.

Larson expressed her enthusiasm, calling the drama a “timeless story” and sharing her excitement about collaborating with Fish and Carson. She noted, “Storytelling has always been how I make sense of life, and I’m eager to share this experience with the West End audience.”

The play centers on Elektra, who, after her father’s assassination, joins forces with her estranged brother Orestes to seek revenge.

Larson, who won Best Actress Oscars, SAG, BAFTA, and Golden Globe awards in 2016 for Room, has not appeared on stage since 2010. Elektra will run at Theatre Royal Brighton from January 13 to 18, 2025, and then at the Duke of York’s Theatre in London starting January 24.

The production is by Empire Street Productions, known for recent West End hits like Prima Facie, Slave Play, and The Pillowman. Director Daniel Fish, whose Oklahoma! won both Tony and Olivier Awards, described working on Elektra as a “thrilling challenge,” highlighting Carson’s translation as bridging the gap between ancient and contemporary themes.
