The 2020 Summer Olympic Games are set to begin this week in Tokyo, with the opening ceremony kicking off Friday, July 23rd. While NBC and its streaming sibling Peacock will both carry coverage of the Games in the US, the Olympics will be streamable on other services as well.
Japanese tennis star Naomi Osaka on Friday lit the Olympic cauldron to mark the formal start of Tokyo 2020, in an Opening Ceremony shorn of glitz and overshadowed by a pandemic but celebrated as a moment of global hope.
The Games will run until August 8, taking up the same slot as originally scheduled for 2020, while the Paralympic Games will now take place from August 24 to September 5.
OC president Thomas Bach hopes next year’s Tokyo Games can help lead the world out of a “dark tunnel” following the coronavirus pandemic.
He said: “We are all humankind. We are in a very dark tunnel at this moment in time. And we do not know how long this tunnel will be.”But we are confident that, with these Olympic Games at these new dates, then we can be a light at the end of this dark tunnel.
