President Moon Jae-in will have a summit with U.S. President Joe Biden in Washington on May 21st.
South Korea’s top office said the visit will reaffirm the solid Seoul-Washington alliance and will expand the comprehensive and reciprocal cooperative relationship between the allies.
Moon is set to become the second leader of another country to visit the White House since Biden’s inauguration and the announcement comes as Biden’s administration is reviewing its policy on trying to end North Korea’s nuclear ambitions. Biden hosted Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga earlier this month and his other encounters with foreign leaders have been virtual because of coronavirus precautions.
It added that the two leaders are expected to hold in-depth discussions on ways to cooperate for complete denuclearization and lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula as well as issues related to the economy, COVID-19 and climate change.
The White House also issued a statement saying that Moon’s visit will highlight the ironclad alliance and that Biden is looking forward to working with Moon to further strengthen the alliance and expand cooperation.
Biden plans to make his first trip abroad as president in June, and is to attend the G-7 summit in Cornwall, England and a meeting of NATO in Brussels.
